I am a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist with certifications from both the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Eye Surgery. My medical journey began with a Suma Cum Laude degree from Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University School of Medicine. I completed my internship in General Surgery and residency in Ophthalmology through the HHC Division of the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.
My advanced training includes fellowships in Cornea and External Diseases at Columbia University, and in Oculoplastic Reconstructive Surgery at New York Medical College, with further specialized studies at leading institutions around the world, including Kyriu, Japan; the Microsurgery Institute of Moscow; Johns Hopkins; the University of Syracuse; and Harvard Medical School.
I am the founder of the Elk County Eye Clinic in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, where I was affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh for over 30 years. In 2014, I relocated to Arizona and established the Eye Consultants of Arizona. I now have the joy and privilege of practicing alongside my son, Dr. Andrew Lu, at My Eye Consultants in Chandler, Arizona.
Throughout my career, I have authored four ophthalmic textbooks and more than 500 continuing medical education (CME) articles. I have also designed ophthalmic surgical instruments, contributing to advancements in the field. My work has been recognized with multiple honors, including awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the prestigious Barraquer Award from the KMSG, and accolades from several national ophthalmological societies.
Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I serve as an Honorary Professor at UPCH University and have taught at Arizona State University and Gateway Community College.
Outside of my professional life, I am married to Laura E. Lu, R.N., ASORN. We have two wonderful sons—Architect L. Michael Lu and Dr. Andrew N. Lu.
